1999/2000 Hunting Seasons for Wild Birds and Wild Mammals in Ireland

(Information still applies in 2002)

Mallard, Teal, Gadwall, Widgeon, Pintail, Shoveler, Scaup, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Goldeneye, Golden Plover, Snipe, Jack Snipe 1st September to 31st January
Red-legged Partridge 1st November to 31st January
Cock Pheasant*, Woodcock 1st November to 31st January
Curlew 1st November to 30th November
Canada Geese (Countrywide) 1st September to 30th September

Canada Geese in Counties Cavan and Leitrim, with the exception of the townlands of Ronish Island, Rinn and Deramfield (Cavan) and the River Shannon (Leitrim).

Greylag Geese (Countrywide) 1st September to 30th September

Greylag Geese: Lady’s Island, Co Wexford and Gearagh East Gearagh West in Co Cork only.

* - N.B. - Technically, it is illegal to shoot a hen pheasant in Ireland without special dispensation!

One can apply for a derogation to extend a season, beyond those stated in the Open Seasons Order, in a particular area.   A ranger pays a visit to the area, and subject to his opinion, may issue a licence
