Dear Supporter
The Scottish countryside is under threat as never before. What we are now experiencing is the start of a systematic attack on the countryside through ill-informed and ill-motivated proposals for new legislation.
The first of these is Lord Watson's Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Bill, which is approaching its final vote in the Scottish Parliament. Second will be a Bill on Land Reform which could well have far reaching effects on how the countryside in Scotland is owned, cared for and managed. We can be sure that these measures will be followed by others. We are therefore Marching to show our opposition to the damage these will cause.
We have already received overwhelming support from throughout the British Isles and overseas and, although it is short notice, we anticipate a very large turnout in Edinburgh on Sunday 16th December. We regret that it is not possible to run
the protest on a day when the Scottish Parliament is sitting but a survey of supporters has shown how difficult it will be for
many of them to come to Edinburgh other than at a weekend. I hope you and your friends and neighbours will be able to be with us in large numbers. I can assure you of a very warm welcome from us all in Scotland.Full details of the arrangements for the day are available through the "March on the Mound" website at www.march-info.org
or by contacting the SCA March office at the numbers given below. We will start with a brief rally in the Meadows at 12 noon. The March route is approximately 1.5 miles long, crossing the
Royal Mile and taking in the west end of Princes' Street. We expect everyone to be free to leave Edinburgh by 2.30pm. Given the proximity to Christmas, those coming by car are strongly advised to arrive early. We have written to supporting groups as well as to all those who arranged coach parties for the cancelled Livelihood & Liberty March in London. If you wish to join a group whether to travel by coach, air or train, I would recommend you contact one of them direct. If you require further information about groups coming from your area, please contact your CA Regional Director [contacts below] or ring our March Helpline and we will endeavour to help you from here.
A number of banners (based upon the ones prepared for the Liberty & Livelihood March) will be produced centrally and issued on the day. You are encouraged to provide your own, subject to the overriding condition that everyone other than people who live and vote in Scotland are in Edinburgh IN SUPPORT OF THE SCOTS against threats to rural Scotland including the proposed Watson Bill.
One final point. I welcome everyone's support to enable rural Scotland to fight for the liberties that generations of Scots have taken for granted. In that struggle we have one enormous encouragement - history shows that those who fight for freedom almost invariably win in the end; those who seek to crush freedom are destined for the dustbin of history.
