...from our countrysideireland newsletter
SAFETYAs most of you will now be doing a little fishing (as the shooting season has come to a close) you may, without realising it, be putting yourself a little further into harms way than normal.
The safety regulations recently introduced in respect of the use of boats and pleasure crafts and the requirement to at least have (if not actually wear) life jackets were mentioned in our last newsletter and we strongly recommend that these regulations be adhered to.
Most of us have been used to fishing from boats, even on the last western lakes, without such safety equipment... but sadly quite a number of people have paid the price over the years. Even when wading, a life jacket can be a very valuable aid should you slip, and along with a stout wading pole, a good souls life will be much safer.
Another danger was recently highlighted on a lake in the UK when a trout angler in a boat was caught in a sudden thunderstorm. Being the highest point on the lake, especially with his modern hi-tech rod, he became the target for fork lightening, and while, thankfully, not killed he was severely injured. We all know not to stand under trees and might even laugh at anyone who reminded us of such a basic precaution in a thunder storm, but many modern rod materials are excellent conductors of electricity, and the surrounding water and damp conditions will act as an effective earth.
