NIO Minister, Angela Smith's has announced her intention to renew the ban on coursing, beagling and all other forms of hunting and shooting Irish Hares. As you will probably be aware, Angela Smith is a former employee of the League Against Cruel Sports. This ban was introduced last year, for one year by the Minister, as a precaution, in response to her apparent concerns that there was a low population of Irish Hares & to give her department time to undertaken research to more accurately determine Irish Hare numbers. This research has now been done and has confirmed that there has been a six-fold increase in Irish Hare numbers over the past two years, exposing Angela Smith's actions as being directed towards stopping field sports rather than the conservation of Irish Hares. It is also unacceptable that there has never been any proper consultation on this ban, and this is inconsistent with government guidelines in a democratic society. Leading scientific experts have publicly disagreed with the minister's actions. If you believe that every person in Northern Ireland is entitled to fair, accountable and unbiased government please support our petition. Hard copies of the petition are available, please contact: Countryside Alliance Ireland t: NI 028 9263 9911 The petition will be the principal mechanism we are going to use to fight this ban. We are asking you to make an extra special effort to ask as many friends and family as possible to enter their details (name & address must be included), and return it to us no later than Monday 6th December. We realise time is short but this is a crucially important principle that we must not concede and we would ask you to make an extraordinary effort to support this campaign. A strongly supported petition, with several thousand signatures will help us to get extensive media coverage to publicise our views and also to further build on the strong local political support we have already developed. Please do everything you can to help. Thank you.
